Responsible consumption

Tool Description

The workshop is built around images about the ecological crisis and about responsible consumption as a possible solution, to react collectively to capitalism and patriarchy. It can be useful for sensibilization specifically on responsible consumption: we can give solutions to environmental pressure and  give support to local SSE initiatives.

  1. First we ask the audience what they think about climate change and the current predatory economy. The audience may be very young, as children from 8 years old, teenagers or adults. In some cases it may be appropriate to adapt some image to the audience (two versions of the Slides support materials are provided here: one for children and one for adults)
  2. Second, we show the first images, about the impact caused by predatory economy. We encourage people to comment on them. We keep the pace by letting people participate
  3. We can do a sort of “performance” to show, with the help of objects, how to make responsible consumption and his consequences. For example we can simulate a picnic where some people use potted food and disposable tableware and other people that use reusable tableware and non-potted food. The public can participate by interpreting the zero consumption model or the residual generating model. At the end of the picnic we can quantify how many residues have been produced in each case. It is also possible to comment on the effects that these patterns of consumption generate in the middle and in our lives.
  4. At the end, we show the second part of the PPT that shows images and shorts videos about environmental crisis solutions around the world. Images and short videos links are contained in the slides.

NOTE: We have the option to print the PPT images. In this case we can assign some printed images to each person in the public and carry out the activity also in external spaces. This mode allows for more dynamic activities.

Participating people usually come out sensitized to the consequences of their consumption and the power they have to create social market. They understand that responsible consumption includes not only the harsh ecology but also social rights. They have a first knowledge of energy saving strategy, water, self-production

Aims

The aim of the workshop is to convey that we can live differently.
The support material (the slides) explain the environmental crisis around the world and give information about existing local and global good counter practices. They want to explain what alternatives to capitalism exist.  These slides use a Photo-language, where we show very symbolic photos about environmental, social, economic impact of our consumption choices.

This kind of tools, as Photo-language use a communication by images, allows to achieve the maximum communicative effect in the shortest possible time, thanks to its strong recall power and to its immediate comprehensibility and ease of memorization
